and life seems black"
P.G. Wodehouse
It is hard to write this but my sweet Patapsco has a huge mass in his abdomen. We couldn’t get him to his regular vet so I took him to one in Chevy Chase who found the mass. The vet said sometimes steroids help to shrink a tumour but pigs don’t do well with them. I talked to Pender Vet and they said they could do emergency surgery but that would be a huge financial strain on me with a high risk and he’s already in serious pain—if I hadn’t been syringe feeding him he’d be dead by now. We are taking him to see Dr. LaPorta Monday if he lives through the weekend and will probably have him euthanized. This is what I had suspected. D says I'm seldom wrong--this time I wish I were.

PATAPSCO IS SO FUNNY
The other afternoon I was lying on the couch and I said "Vladimir Zhirinovsky" out loud. Patapsco rumbled. I thought it was a coincidence so I said it a couple times and he rumbled every time.
I'm wondering if it's a political thing or if he just likes or dislikes the name.

JANE DOE'S PIGS
Hi, my name is Jane Hautanen (Jane Doe), former producer of WMAL's Pet Talk and owner of two adorable guinea pigs, Pippin (formerly Thunder) and Pandora, the joys of my life (sorry, don't have a digital picture of Pandora or my late Lightning).
Rather than boring people with pig stories, I figured I would put everything onto one website and let them be bored if they chose. Most of the links below apply to the Washington, DC area (duh--I live here), however some are national and international. I am not paid for any of this, so any of the links mentioned are those I've dealt with personally or those which have been recommended to me. If I had a bad time with one, I would either tell you, or just plain ignore it.
SECURING A PIG
I do not sell pigs. Or pig supplies. I would probably make more money if I did. Here are places (in alphabetical order) where you can get a pig for little or no cost. These are shelters, rescues and individual owners, all with lovely pigs looking for homes!
Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, from whence cometh my beloved Thunder
Cavy Rescue
Cavy Spirit -- West Coast Piggies!
DC Guinea Pigs -- includes outlying Maryland and Virginia counties
Guinea Pig Adoption Network -- where I got my darling Lightning, who started it all
Petfinder -- shelters and rescues all over the country -- can also help track lost pets
CARE AND FEEDING
Guinea pigs have different dietary needs from rabbits, ferrets, etc. Most nobatle is their need for a vitamin C supplement. Veteranarians and experienced owners will tell you the best foods are Oxbow Hay products, including Cavy Cuisine and Cavy Performance pellets. Here are some good sources which can provide you with hints on the care and feeding of cavies (guinea pigs) and tell you where to find the products.
Cavy Cages -- Just add pigs!
Cavy Madness
Cavy Spirit
Collins Memorial Hospital for Animals -- sells Oxbow products
Companions Pets
Eastern Exotics -- sells Oxbow products
Guinealynx -- Mostly medical but all kinds of useful info.
House Rabbit Society -- no, this is not a typo. They have a pig link and are a source of bunny/pig products
Peter Gurney's Page -- this guy is regarded as the authority on guinea pigs in the English-speaking world.
Petco
Pet Pantry
Petsmart
Seagull's Guinea Pig Compendium
VETS
Regardless of what you think, you will want to take your pig to the vet at least once, if nothing else to make sure you have not been sold/given a defective pig. Also, if you have ANY other pets, you will want to make sure your new pig is not harboring anything which can spread. If you're like me, you will probably at one time or another do something stupid to land your pig(s) in the vet's office, and if your pigs are like mine, they will probably do something stupid to land themselves in a vet's office. Make sure you find a vet who treats pigs, not just dogs and cats, has had experience with pigs and enjoys it. It's a good idea to find one while your pig is perfectly healthy, so you are not frantically flipping through the phone book or clicking through your computer at 3 AM on a rainy morning. Here is a list of vets, mostly in the Washington, DC area, some of whom I have had experience with, others who come recommended to me.
Blue Ridge Veterinary Associates -- Both my pigs were fixed there. With Pippin/Thunder, everything went beautifully. Lightning had some complications, however, the staff was very nice.
Collins Memorial Hospital for Animals -- All my pigs have been patients there and boarded there
Del Ray Animal Hospital -- Thunder has been a patient there
Eastern Exotics -- Two of my pigs have been patients there, Lightning was boarded there. Dr. Leonard Rice, in the same building, went to my high school, but don't hold that against him.
Dr. Lee Morgan at Georgetown University
Great Falls Veterinary Hospital
Kentlands Veterinary Hospital
Tackett's Mill Animal Hospital -- no web address, call 703-494-8293
Dr. Hannah Siemering
Stahl Exotics -- Dr. Stahl's partner, David Crum, saved Lightning's life
Vetfinder -- Nationwide!
JANE DOE'S FRIENDS
Believe it or not I have friends, but none of them submitted their pet pages, so these will have to do:
Noah, the Sea-going Guinea Pig
The Piggy Page
Robyn’s Guinea Pig Page
The Seaside Piggies
Treen’s Pigs

JANEY'S NEW BABY!
Janey and Pandora proudly announce the newest addition to their family. She is a brown and white Abyssinian sow, adopted from the Montgomery County Humane Society, and is anywhere from four to ten months old. Her name is Perpetua after Bridget Jones’ boss and after St. Perpetua who was also a nursing mother. Unfortunately for her, her shelter name was “Beet,” her two children, whom I believe will be adopted by someone else soon, are “Beet I” and “Beet II.”
Here is her picture, she is much cuter up close:

PIGSTRAVAGANZA!
The date for the Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue annual pignic has been set!
Date: Sunday, October 5, 2008
Time of the Event: 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm
Location: Reisterstown Regional Park Pavilion 401 Mitchell Drive, Reisterstown
http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/Agencies/recreation/countyparks/regionalparks/reisterstown.html
This is a fun-filled day for all--including your piggies. For those of you newbies out there, our Fall PIGSTRAVAGANZA! Pignic is held under a pavilion, and next to a grassy area. There is plenty of room for piggie playpens. And, no need to worry about the grass, as it's not treated. Those of you who have piggies sensitive to clover, though, may want to be careful where you place your pen or bring a "pignic blanket" to place under your pen.
This event will include: - A Bake Sale with yummy goodies, and maybe even cookies for your piggies! - Our MGPR t-shirt will be availabe for purchase, for both members and non-members. - Various educational materials such as books and health journals will be available for purchase. - Supplies such as Oxbow products, and Carefresh bedding will be available for purchase to members and non-members at a rate cheaper than most retail stores. - We will also hold TWO raffles this year! - And of course, our quirky but fun piggy awards will be handed out to those irresistable little piggies in attendance.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, BABY!
Poor Baby Pandora. Her 4th birthday was two weeks ago today, but I didn't mention it here, what with the tornado and Pippin being overnite at the vet's. Here is her Horoscope from Holiday Mathis:
"When you're hot, you're hot. You'll be chased and courted this year. You're not playing hard to get; rather, you have plenty outside of love to occupy your attention, so you actually are hard to get. This translates into financial opportunity in August. Family healings happen in September. Sagittarius and Aquarius are your avid supporters. Your lucky numbers are: 50, 2, 6, 49 and 14."
A couple days ago Pandora got what she needed most -- a butt cut. Of course she acted mortally wounded.
Here is Pippin's horoscope (May 8th):
"TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (MAY 8). You make your mark in the world this year. You're not content to be standing in the background, playing your family role or slaving away at work you don't even like. You're motivated to do what it takes to shine and move ahead this month. Shared activities in June heal a relationship. Sagittarius and Virgo adore and support you. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 20, 1, 15 and 10."
We have only spent one of his six birthdays together, as I am usually in Puerto Rico then.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABY
Today is baby Pandora's third birthday, as far as anyone can tell.
Holiday Mathis sez "you're sharing yourself on a whole new level and discovering fulfilling emotional intimacy with loved ones. Ask for what you need, and you get more and then some! You're a social butterfly during the next five weeks. Plant money ideas in July, and they grow by September. Travel in August. Sagittarius and Libra people wow you with affection. Your lucky numbers are: 6, 30, 23, 4 and 12."
Pippin's birthday was May 8: "This year will be unlike any other! Expect world-class breakthroughs and plenty of support for your ideas — spend the next eight weeks communicating them. If looking, career changes come together in August. You'll find romance at ordinary spots just around the corner. Cancer people are fabulous; Pisces people, arguably passionate. Your lucky numbers are: 10, 3, 31, 35 and 41."
Unfortunately both were at the vet's for Pippin's birthday, they did get extra veggies when I got back. Today both of them are getting extra veggies.

Two years ago yesterday my beloved Lightning died. Yesterday I gave Pippin and Pandora extra pats, kisses and treats. When so much has been taken from you it's hard not to be scared that more will be.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABY
Baby Pandora is supposedly two years old today. As on all birthdays and holidays she gets spoiled with all the veggies she can eat. Mom says make sure I give some to Pippin, too. As though I didn't give them both some fresh veggies every day. .

A NICE TIME AT THE PIGNIC
We had a lovely time -- the weather held out. My pigs were more interested in the food than in other pigs or humans -- they stuffed themselves and came back exhausted. Of course they got lots of attention and I got some compliments on my piggy traveler.
Both of them got to try dill, which they liked, and mint, which even Pippin, the pig who eats everything, wouldn't touch.

Three years ago today I picked up my beloved Pippin from the shelter. I was told he was a year old then, but I think he was younger as it turned out he had major expansion plans.
